Looking for a way to straighten your teeth without the added clunk of metal braces? Invisalign is the ideal method that provides the same results as braces but is much less noticeable!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic procedure that works to align the crooked teeth over time, similar to how braces do. They are practically invisible compared to traditional braces and they are removeable while you’re eating or brushing your teeth. However, they should be worn at last 22 hours per day to have their full effect on the mouth.

Each set of Invisalign trays are custom made to the patient and designed specifically for them to help with the following conditions:

  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crowded teeth
  • Crossbites
  • Crooked teeth
  • Overly spaced teeth

How do clear aligners realign the teeth?

Similar to how braces work, Invisalign clear aligners gradually adjust the teeth over the course of several months to several years. Let’s break down the overall process:

During your initial visit, your orthodontist will take x-rays of where your teeth currently are and devise a treatment plan for you.

Then, they’ll make your first set of custom trays that will move your teeth into position over the course of several months.

Once your teeth reach that stage, you’ll receive a new and updated set of clear aligners to move your teeth to the next stage. This process happens repeatedly until your teeth are where they should be!

On average, patients only have to wear their clear aligners for 3 months to 2 years.

What is the after-treatment care?

Once your teeth are at the point where your orthodontist feels they should be, you can move from wearing consistent clear aligners to a fitted clear or traditional retainer to be worn at night. You shouldn’t need to wear the retainer all day, but this can depend on the severity of your initial misalignment.

The purpose is to help prevent your teeth from reverting back to their old formation. This is common as the teeth are no longer being forced into their current position so wearing your retainer is vital for maintain an aligned bite.

Who is eligible for Invisalign?

Anyone who needs their bite aligned is technically eligible for Invisalign clear aligners. However, there are certain qualifiers that orthodontist look for and prefer.

  • Children and adults at least 13 years of age.
  • Bite misalignments that are not severe
  • Children and adults who can take consistent care of their aligners

Difference between Invisalign and traditional braces

Invisalign is newer technology that promotes a healthy, aligned jaw and teeth through the use of clear trays custom fitted for a patient’s goals. The process of straightening teeth with Invisalign is between 3 and 24 months, but on average, patients wear Invisalign for one year. This is dependent on the alignment issues needing to be fixed. Invisalign is virtually unnoticeable and often more cost effective.

Traditional braces typically require 1 to 3 years to take full effect. They are also very noticeable in the mouth and require a significant amount of care in order to prevent damage to the metal. They are typically the least cost-effective method, but they are the most common.
